Nevada Women Are the Country’s #1 Victims of Domestic Violence – Las Vegas Criminal Defense Attorney Andre Lagomarsino

According to a Violence Policy Center (VPC) Report, Nevada women are the #1 victims of domestic violence in the U.S. With a rate of 2.62 domestic violence incidents per 100 thousand, Nevada ranks #1 for women killed by men. This is the third year in a row that Nevada has been #1. Numbers 2 – 10 were:

1. South Carolina (1.94 per 100,000)
2. Tennessee (1.91 per 100,000)
3. Louisiana (1.86 per 100,000)
4. Virginia (1.77 per 100,000)
5. Texas (1.75 per 100,000)
6. New Mexico (1.63 per 100,000)
7. Hawaii and Arizona (1.62 per 100,000), and 8. Georgia (1.61 per 100,000).

VPC, a national educational organization working to stop gun death and injury, compiles the domestic violence report – When Men Murder Women: An Analysis of 2010 Homicide Data” – using data from the FBI’s unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report. The annual VPC report details national, as well as state-by-state information on female homicides that involve one female murder victim and one male offender.

Nationally, the rate of women killed by men in single victim/single offender instances is 1.22 per 100 thousand. In 2010, 1,800 females were murdered by males in single victim/single offender incidents. Firearms were the most common weapon used, with handguns being used 70% of the time. Ninety-four percent of the females killed were murdered by someone they knew, with 65% of these being a wife or intimate acquaintance of the killer. In 88% of all the domestic violence incidents where the circumstances could be determined, the homicides were not related to the commission of any other felony, such as rape or robbery.

According to the Shade Tree, a Las Vegas Valley women and children’s shelter, in 2012 17 women have died from a domestic violence incident. The women and children’s shelter believes the increase of stressors, such as the economy, along with a transient population, bear part of the responsibility for Nevada’s domestic violence incidents.
